A little preparation makes a big difference to how quickly your dog settles into their first stay. None of it is complicated — it's mostly about reducing surprises.
Sort the paperwork early
Make sure core vaccinations are up to date well before drop-off, and gather any medication with clear instructions. Getting this out of the way early means the first day is about settling in, not admin.
Bring the smells of home
Familiar scents are reassuring. A blanket, a worn t-shirt or a favourite toy that smells like home helps a nervous dog relax in a new space much faster than anything brand new.
Tire them out beforehand
A good walk or play session on drop-off morning takes the edge off. A dog who arrives a little tired settles more easily than one arriving with a full tank of energy.
A quick packing checklist
- Vaccination records
- Any medication, labelled with doses and timing
- Your dog's usual food (sudden diet changes upset stomachs)
- A familiar blanket or toy
- Emergency contact details
Keep goodbyes short
Long, emotional farewells tell your dog something is wrong. A calm, matter-of-fact goodbye works far better — most dogs are happily distracted within minutes.
